Jim Mix escapes from the state asylum and returns home to False River, stalked by the asylum's chief of security and allied by a half lunatic/half angel ringmaster named Charles. Jim travels through False River unrestricted by the laws of time and space, until he finally faces his ultimate question, "Why is there never a lunatic around when you need one?"
