After twenty years of service in the New Zealand Army, Captain Will Bastion is forced to resign and is discharged from peacekeeping duty in the Balkans because of an incident his superiors want to keep under wraps. He returns home to Raukura, New Zealand, for the first time in 18 years, to bury his father, his tribe's chief - - a leader whose mantle, by Maori tradition, must be inherited by Will.
