Hotis Brown sets out on a tractor for a three-day, hundred-mile journey across West Texas to visit his dying brother. Local sheriff Bernie Dupree and diner proprietor Betty unite in their concern for his safety, and in doing so come to realize they share other, deeper feelings. Meanwhile, both Hotis and his sister-in-law Emmeline are forced to confront their own history and reconcile past regrets for choices made years ago.
