October 2005

Dear Fellow Guild Member,

As you know, the Directors Guild Foundation's main purpose is to provide confidential loans to Guild members (in good standing) who are in need of emergency financial assistance.  These loans, which offer a helping hand to those who are unable to manage food, medical and/or rent payments because of temporary financial setbacks, are dependent upon the annual contributions of our membership.

It can happen to any of us.  Work dries up for a time.  A show is cancelled. A contract ends. And we’re faced with a temporary situation of being in between paychecks.  But that doesn’t stop our rent payment, food bills or medical insurance.  Who steps in when we need it most?  Thankfully, the Directors Guild Foundation is here to lend a hand.  The Foundation was able to respond to very heavy demands from fellow members during the period 2002-2005, with loans totaling more than $637,492.  But the fund must be recharged and your help is urgently needed to continue this important program.

In addition to the confidential loans, the Foundation provides many other services to our membership. The Foundation is a major contributor to the Motion Picture and Television Fund.  Foundation funds have been used to build more hospital rooms and to expand the living facilities to better serve both DGA members and others in the entertainment community.

Since November 2000, the Foundation has been the sole underwriter for conservation and preservation of the DGA-Motion Picture Industry Conservation Collection at UCLA.  This important collection, housed at the UCLA Film and Television Archive, is composed of new prints of feature films directed by our members under DGA agreements, ensuring that our work is preserved for future generations.  As a result of the Foundation's support, 638 films have been archived to-date through this program.
