Todd Haynes discusses Carol

November 21, 2015 DGA Q&As in New York and Los Angeles

Two women from different worlds find themselves in the midst of a love affair in Director Todd Haynes’ new drama Carol.

In Haynes’ adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt, Carol (Cate Blanchett), an older woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage in 1950s New York, finds her life changed after falling into an unexpected love affair with Therese (Rooney Mara), a young Manhattan department store clerk. But as Carol seeks to free herself from the shackles of her restrictive marriage, her husband Harge (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother after her new relationship comes to light.

Following the November 21 DGA screening in New York, Haynes spoke about the challenges of taking this story from the page to the screen in a conversation moderated by Director Kelly Reichardt (Meek’s Cutoff). Haynes also spoke about the film in a conversation with Director Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) following the DGA screening in Los Angeles on November 29.

In addition to Carol, Haynes’ work includes the feature films Poison, Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far from Heaven, and I'm Not There; an episode of the television series Enlightened; and the entirety of the mini-series Mildred Pierce. He has been a member of the DGA since 2007.
