Tommy Lee Jones: The Homesman

November 9, 2014 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A drifter assists a woman transporting three mad women across the frontier in Director Tommy Lee Jones’ western The Homesman.

In the film, pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) undertakes a mission to save three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter) who have been driven insane by pioneer life. Cuddy plans to take them back to civilization, traveling cross country by covered wagon. Realizing how difficult and dangerous the task will be, she hires low-life drifter George Briggs (Jones) to assist her in getting them safely through the harsh Nebraska Territories.

Following the DGA screening in Los Angeles on November 9, Jones spoke about the making of The Homesman in a conversation with Director Ron Shelton (Hollywood Homicide), who had previously directed Jones in the 1994 feature Cobb.

In addition to The Homesman, Jones’ filmography includes the feature film The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and the movies for television The Sunset Limited and The Good Old Boys. He has been a DGA member since 1994.
